Dorothy Wickenden, the mother of Rebecca Weiser ’14 and Sarah Weiser ’10, snagged the leading spot in the “Talk of the Town” section of the Feb. 27 edition of The New Yorker. Wickenden is an editor at the magazine, and her article, “Joe and Debbie,” analyzes President Obama’s strategy for winning over middle class voters in his bid for reelection, comparing Obama’s State of the Union “Debbie the Secretary” anecdote to John McCain’s famous “Joe the Plumber” story. “With the Republicans preoccupied by their race to the right, Wickenden writes, “Obama has the luxury of honing a message aimed at the middle.” This is no easy task, however, and Wickenden points out that Obama’s “an America built to last” slogan sounds “like an ad for a mattress company, or a car company.”
