Editor’s note: Tonight’s list was inspired by Emma Strickler ’14. (Emma is not a snow-eating fanatic.)
I consider myself something of a winter weather expert. I’ve lived in the Milwaukee area the majority of my life and experienced the full gamut of wintertime joys and holy terrors. One of my favorite things about winter, of course, is the snow. I’ve been eating that snow for a long time, and I know I’m not alone on that one. So here are some helpful tips on enjoying the fluffy white stuff.
- If you are dehydrated from a long day of snowball fights in da quad, sledding down to the KAC and building your own snow Nuge, you should go ahead and grab some snow. It’s important to select some from an untouched area. Now, don’t shove a bunch of snow directly into your mouth. You risk a brain freeze and I heard somewhere that your stomach might expand — maybe that was just with fake snow. Instead, suck on a manageable handful at a time. The best way is to melt the snow first.
- Make it into a snow cone! Fill up a cup with some fresh snow and then pour some food coloring, syrup or whatever your heart desires right on top.
- Use it for ice in an adult beverage. This technique probably wouldn’t work too well in a blender. Just put some in a container in your freezer and take some out when you need it.
Don’t: There are some safety precautions that I believe everyone should keep in mind when eating snow.
- The obvious ones: don’t eat snow that’s yellow, brown or any color other than white.
- If you live in an area with a propensity for acid rain, you might want to avoid eating snow on a regular basis.
- Try to stay away from snow near garbage and recycling areas. I don’t know why you would be over there, but then again, I don’t know your life. You run the risk of taking a bite of snow full of sharp objects like shattered glass or small pointed rocks. Wouldn’t want to chip a tooth! Ouch.
- Possible nuclear radiation. Now this one might be a little outdated if you don’t live in the Ukraine or the late 1950s/early 60s. Nonetheless, something to consider.
