Beloved MiddleGround to Close

Update: The operators of Wiggin Street Coffee, which is replacing MiddleGround, already own the River Road Coffee House in Granville, OH (that’s where Denison is) and One Line Coffee, the company that will be supplying the beans for MiddleGround 2.0. We’re going to be speaking with them in about 10 minutes.

In my younger and more vulnerable years, my UCC gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. “Order a grilled cheese with sweet potato fries and garlic aioli,” she said. “It’s cheap and not on the menu.”

The years of MiddleGround’s reign are over, dear friends. The golden dust floating in the windows has settled on the linoleum for good.

Anyway, here’s the notice posted in the MiddleGround window:

We have decided to close the doors at Middle Ground in order to focus our full attention on the Village Inn. Middle Ground’s final day of business will be Friday, June 15.

Many of Middle Ground’s most popular menu items (yes, soup, sweet potato FF, etc.) and local organic flavor will soon be available at the VI. We plan to open the VI for lunch beginning in August.

Starting August 1, Wiggin Street Coffee will open at this location. Wiggin Street Coffee will proudly serve One Line Coffee out of Columbus (onelinecoffee.com), focusing on bringing single frarm and small co-op coffees to the Gambier community. In addition to maintaining the sense of community developed by Middle Ground, Wiggin Street Coffee will provide a selection of bagels, pastries and light lunch items.

Whether you were one of our everyday regulars or simply passed through a time or two, it’s been our pleasure to seve you here for the past 8+ years and we look forward to seeing you at the VI in the near future.

Middle Ground gift cards will be honored at both the VI and the new coffee house through the end of the year.

Joel & Margaret

We believed in the curried red lentil soup, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter–tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. … And one fine morning–

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Thanks to M.S. Kord ’13 and Oli Olufemi ’14 for their work as intrepid on-campus (Her Campus?) reporters.

  1. So what? Middle Ground was dirty, overpriced and had low-quality food. Hopefully the new owners will know how to run a good coffee shop.

  3. What’s going to happen to the stuff INSIDE Middle Ground, you think? As in…the books, some of the art, etc?

  4. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  5. I hope they will get rid of those disfunctional, uncomfortable booths and make it look like a coffee shop instead of a diner.

  6. I have to say, I really enjoy the update on this article. “We’ll be talking to them in about 10 minutes.” It makes it sound like some existential quandary in which the Thrill is always 10 minutes away from talking to the owners of the new place.
