We’re picking back up on the feature wherein we spotlight an SMA each Friday to raise awareness about the resources available to victims of sexual assault. Remember, the SMAs are subordinate to the Counseling Center, so anything you tell them is kept confidential. They also have an anonymous hotline you can call if you need assistance: 740-358-1544. Stay safe this weekend, and know that there is always someone you can talk to if you need help.
Today, we’re featuring Karina Cruz, a junior from New York.
Cookie pie or giant cookie? This is honestly one of the hardest questions I’ve been asked…Maybe giant cookie? If it’s soft. (Ed. This is the first time any one has mentioned the quality of the giant cookie, I respect the hell out of that.)
What’s the best meal you’ve ever had (excluding cookie pie and/or giant cookie)? I’ve had a lot of great food, but my best experience with food was when I was in Ghana. We hiked to a waterfall and after swimming for a while our tour guide cut a fresh pineapple and that was the most delicious and refreshing thing I’ve ever had.
What’s the last good book you read? 1984.
Why do you love your hometown? The Bronx, New York? How can I not?
What’s the best class you’ve taken at Kenyon? I feel like my best classes are yet to come. This semester sounds exciting with my Urban Education and French Revolution courses. I’m ready.
Why did you become an SMA? In terms of cases of sexual misconduct and assault, my automatic response would be to redirect my anger and emotions into productive action that would lead to immediate change. I’ve realized that these issues aren’t simple; the most productive and empowering thing I can do is the work I am doing as an SMA. I love my job and it’s one of the most invigorating things I’ve ever done. I still can’t believe I am used as a catalyst to help people.
Holy shit, missed this girl
So glad she’s back
