The Olin Vibrating iPhone Plague

Do you know what is the most disturbing about Club Olin? No, it is not the sub-arctic temperatures and no, it is also not the extreme and unappreciated levels of chattiness on the third floor. The thing that is most disturbing about Club Olin is that everyone leaves their iPhones on vibrate and receives many, many text messages.

Most of the time when I am in Olin, I am reading a book for class (usually a dense book of social theory because I am a senior Sociology major and not a senior American Studies major). While I am reading, like many of you, I place my silenced-but-still-on-vibrate-iPhone on the table in front of me. I keep my phone in front of me so that when someone texts me I can respond and also because I like to listen to pink noise to deal with the aforementioned third floor chatter problem. But pink noise can’t stop the proliferation of iPhone vibrations!

All night long, as I read my difficult but engaging book, I feel iPhones vibrate on tables. Your iPhone, my iPhone, the girl three tables over’s iPhone. The two distinct buzzes cannot be escaped. I cannot stay focused on Foucault. Is this any way to live?

I have some proposed solutions:

  • Let’s all start putting our phones on our laps, not on the tables.
  • Let’s all start putting our phones on Do Not Disturb mode.
  • Let’s all petition Apple to make a selection of new and customizable vibration patterns change our vibrations patters to customizable vibration patterns so I stop confusing Beefy’s iPhone alerts with my own.
