As most of you (hopefully) know, 11:10-12:00 am every Tuesday and Thursday is Common Hour. Common Hour is designed to be a time for lectures, readings, and “conflict-free academic advising time”. Many of you may laugh at the idea of Common Hour being “conflict-free”, because Common Hour is also frequently used for cancelled classes and group meetings.Feeling like a good, smart, worldly college student and attending talks all the time feels really great, but for some people it’s kind of impossible. I know a time that’s free for everyone is a lot to ask for, but I’m going to take this opportunity to propose an Everyone Hour on Wednesdays and Sundays from 2:17-3:07 a.m. Common Hour also has the unfortunate side effect of putting you in a horribly awkward situation if you try to say you have a class then to get out of something else. Everyone knows you don’t have a class. They know you’re just lazy.
The real bone that I have to pick with Common Hour, however, is not it’s lack of commonness: it’s the fact that many people use Common Hour as a time to get lunch. You see, I’m a person that likes to get lunch at right around 11, and on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, this works great. Everyone eats lunch at 12:10 and I can bypass the rush. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, however, things get crazy at about 11:10. Come on, guys, I don’t have the patience to wait in like for 10 minutes to get my sweet potato fries. I have to lower my standards and go for an English muffin or a PB&J. Unbelievable.
