College is a stage of our lives where we are often removed from our families for the first time, but this is not always so. Many of us have siblings here, or at other schools, with whom we share very close bonds, experiences, academic interests and even professors. This piece is the fourth in a planned series on relationships with one’s siblings while in college. This week I interviewed Mariah Williamson ’16 and Matt Williamson ’18.

Mariah, left, with Matt. Both looking fly as hell.
How did each of you end up choosing Kenyon?
Mariah: I was recruited for the swim team, and then picked Kenyon after my recruit trip. Matt came to visit with my parents and liked the campus and team enough that he decided to come on a recruiting trip as well.
Matt: Both of us are swimmers who really wanted to continue to compete at a high level in college. At the same time we both are very serious students and have very eclectic academic interests. I think once Mariah originally found out about Kenyon, and specifically that it would be a place that would provide her (and eventually me) a chance to do both these things, there was really no other place that could compete.
Do you see each other around campus a lot? Any shared hobbies and/or organizations?
Mariah: We’re both on the swim team so we see each other fairly often, but we live on opposite ends of campus (Old Kenyon/ Mather) so we really don’t run into each other that frequently. Sometimes I text him if I haven’t seen him in a few days to make sure he’s still alive and well.
Matt: I wouldn’t say we see each other too often. Obviously, because we’re on the swim team, we do see each other at swim practice, but because we don’t usually swim the same events we train in different groups. Also, Mariah lives in Old K and I’m up in Mather so our paths don’t cross very often outside of the pool.
What’s your favorite thing about each other?
Mariah: My favorite thing about Matt is the incredible detail with which he tells stories.
Matt: My favorite thing about Mariah is her sense of humor. She’s got an incredibly sharp dry wit that always cracks me up. She doesn’t show it off around a lot of people so it’s especially fun when she shares it with me.
Pick a dog that most represents your sibling.
Mariah: Matt would be a prairie dog.
Matt: German Shepherd. Intense, focused, loyal, heart of gold.
