Kenyon Krafts: Homage to Autumn

Kenyon-Autumn

Baby come back

We all know that fall is the prettiest time of year in Gambier, Ohio. The hard sharp leaves, the insects in unexpected places, the constant fight for survival against bloodthirsty skeleton hordes: what’s not to love? Unfortunately, it’s April right now. April, the month where the sun is acting like a total goober and shining everywhere, turning fragile folds of skin into crunchy pink husks, melting perfectly good dirt-igloos into dirt-puddles. Where am I supposed to sleep now, Sun? In a bed? Cloth chafes my tender neck pustules and irritates my ichthyosis. So in this time of need, when the icy caress of late fall is a mere fantasy, I took it upon myself to be crafty and create an homage to autumn. And you can too!

Go to the servery and pick out some bold autumnal hues to use as a base for your creation.

I chose my favorite condiments, but use whatever works for you! This is the time to let your imagination run wild.

Accessorize your base with some beautiful leaves. Use any color leaf you want, except green. What is this, an homage to spring? What are we, Slinky’s? Nice try, capitalists.

I chose brown!

Make the exterior pop. Here, I added some earth tones to the outside of my model and drew some bucolic autumn leaves and a single pumpkin. This really screams fall. And absolutely nothing else is screaming. I don’t know what you’re talking about, officer. I’ve just been sitting here quietly drawing leaves this whole time.

Who’s hand is that? We Just Don’t Know.

Set it against a woodsy backdrop. There weren’t any cavernous pumpkins with gaping smiles around, so I picked the next best thing: a tree! And not just any tree: a tree with bark.

Go forth and kraft, dear readers, but never forget: the knowing eye hears what the nose forgets.
