A Day in the Life: Darryl Uy

In this feature, The Thrill will showcase a typical day of a member of the Kenyon Community: student, faculty, or staff. If you have nominations for people to be showcased, please share them in the comments or email us at thekenyonthrill@gmail.com.

The Admissions Office is a strange sort of limbo at Kenyon. It was probably your introduction to the school, but following admission, many students never step foot in Ransom Hall again. That doesn’t mean, however, that Admissions isn’t constantly bustling with activity. And who holds the reigns? Interim Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Darryl Uy. From Ransom to Twitter, here is April 15, 2015 in the life of Darryl Uy.

4:38 am — Woken up by our dogs because they need to go out to do their business.  Fall asleep on the couch.
6:47 am — Wake up because our dogs are hungry.  Feed the cats, too.
7:50 am — Meet the new VP of Student Affairs Meredith Harper Bonham ’92 at the Kenyon Inn for breakfast.
8:55 am — Wiggin Street to grab a little Heaven in a Cup (a tall hot chocolate made with white chocolate).

9:03 am — Touch base with several folks in the office about a transfers, hiring, and a student’s travel plans for our upcoming admitted students program.
10:06 am — Say hi to an admitted student from Oregon and surprise him with a gift — a book of his choice, either John Green’s Paper Towns, Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken, or Ransom Riggs’ Miss Peregrine’s home for Peculiar Children (he chose Miss Peregrine’s).
10:23 am — Answer a phone call from the college counselor (who was my former Latin teacher) at my old high school in New Jersey.  He invites me to speak at a college program later this spring, which I unfortunately will not be able to do.
10:54 am — Meet with Kathy Lake in the President’s Office to discuss final details for my session with the Board of Trustees next week.
11:03 am — Sign thank you cards for next week’s Administrative Assistant Appreciation Day.
12:22 pm — Head home for lunch and to let the dogs out.

5:22 pm — Head home to let dogs out and feed cats.
5:50pm — Continue reading candidate applications.
6:01 pm — Breathe a sigh of relief as transfer decisions are released online.
