My name is Mia Fox. I never believed in ghosts until I came face to face with one. So I set out on a quest to capture what I once saw video. With no big camera crews following us around, I am joined only by fellow investigator Becca Allen and our equipment tech Jenna Bouquot. The three of us will travel to some of the most highly active paranormal locations on campus, where we will spend maybe thirty minutes or so being locked down.
These are our Ghost Adventures.
Chances are you pass through the portal to eternal damnation on your way to breakfast.
The two pillars that flank either side of Middle Path are colloquially known as the Gates of Hell and mark the entrance to south campus (and apparently to Hell, as their name implies).
The origin of their name is as unexplainable as their link to the paranormal. In the 1980s, Phil Donahue hosted a psychic on the Phil Donahue Show. The psychic claimed that the Gates of Hell were located in Gahanna, a suburb of Columbus. To some ears, Gahanna became Gambier, and shortly thereafter, all hell broke loose.
People were genuinely concerned that the gates to, you know, Hell were truly on campus.
Looking to qualm some fears and clear up some facts, the College requested a transcript of the episode; no mention of Gambier, Kenyon, or gates was made. The rumor remains that if you walk through the Gates of Hell when the clock strikes midnight, you’ve just earned yourself a one way ticket to Hell. We went looking for any signs of the paranormal.
11:49 pm – Time of arrival. In an amazing turn of events we see what we think is a UFO hovering just feet above the ground.
11:51 pm – It’s just the light from a new lamp…still feels creepy.
11:54 pm – Acrid smell fills the air. Ghosts need to chill with these scents.
11:57 pm – Debunked! The smell is years of urination festering on the pedestal of the Gates of Hell.
11:59 pm – Search for any ghostly goo, markings, or signs is futile. Nothing unusual is found.
MIDNIGHT – Walked right through those gates, and actually arrived in Hell, otherwise known as the library the week before finals.
