Meet an SMA: Chloe Farrell ’16
The Thrill spotlights a Sexual Misconduct Advisor regularly to raise awareness about the resources available to survivors of sexual assault. Remember, the SMAs are subordinate to the Counseling Center, so anything you tell them is kept confidential. They also have an anonymous hotline you can call if you need assistance: 740-358-1544. Stay safe this weekend, and know that there is always someone you can talk to if you need help. Today, we’re featuring Chloe Farrell ’16 from Davis, California.
Cookie pie or giant cookie?
I’m a little worried about what insights this question might give into the depths of my psyche. I’m not entirely sure what a cookie pie is, so I guess I’ll go with giant cookie.
What’s the best meal you’ve ever had?
Okay so in the Mission District of San Francisco, there is this restaurant Mission Chinese that is just incredible. They do these really great Egg noodle dish with tons of fresh ginger. That is the thing I crave most when I’m at Kenyon for sure.
What’s the last good book you read?
I’ve been really into poetry recently. Seam by Tarfia Faizullah and Sancta by Andy Grace are the two that I can return to repeatedly and still be blown away by their use of metaphor and language. They are the kind of books that literally make me see the world in a new way. If you want to be sad and elated at the same time, these are the books to read.
Why do you love Kenyon?
This is such a nostalgic question to get as a second-semester senior. Honestly, there are so many reasons. I’m not saying Kenyon has always been a walk in the park, but there are some really incredible minds here. And so so much kindness. I really think that Kenyon changes you, and at least for me, it has formed me into a better, more empathetic person. I think that because everyone is in such close proximity, Kenyon teaches you to be kind to and to understand people in a way that you wouldn’t have to at a larger school.
What’s your favorite place to nap on campus?
That really comfortable chair on the third floor of the library that’s in the far back corner near the windows facing Horvitz.
What movie have you watched most frequently?
Beginners with Ewan McGregor and Mélanie Laurent. It’s just a really sweet film. I watched it probably five times last year while I was making books for Book Arts and I keep returning to it whenever I’m feeling down.
Why did you become an SMA?
Statistics have demonstrated that sexual assault is an issue that impacts everyone, whether they realize it or not. I got involved with SMAs because I don’t want anyone to have to work through the pain and confusion of these sort of situations by themselves. For me, SMAs are just a really tangible way to contribute to the safety and mental health of Kenyon students.
