If you know Sam Culbert ’19, chances are you know Nadine Hemming ’19 as well, and if you know Nadine, you probably also know Sam. These two got acquainted during their first year at Kenyon, when everyone kept confusing them for each other. I definitely have come across Nadine in passing and thought to myself, “hey, look, it’s Sam,” before realizing that it was her doppelgänger instead. I had lots of fun asking them questions about their lives and I hope the rest of you enjoy reading them!
The three of us sat down at a Peirce table on new side. As I glanced up over the paper napkin dispenser, I definitely felt like I was seeing double. Not wanting to let this super-fun opportunity pass me by, I started right in with the hard-hitting questions.
Me: You’ve both done dance stuff at Kenyon, right? So if you had to come up with an interpretive twin dance, what would it look like?
Sam: It would just be us walking side-by-side for a very long time.
Nadine: And then I feel like we should face each other and do some cheesy mirroring stuff. And we actually are mirrors of each other because our nose piercings are on opposite sides!
(It’s true! They are!)
Next, I figured I’d try and find out a bit more about these two identical entities.
Me: Besides dance, what do you two do on campus?
Sam: I’m an English and psych double major. And I volunteer at elementary schools and perform in Billy Shakes!
Nadine: I’m a classics and dance major. I’m on Archons and I am on the dance team and I choreograph for the dance concerts.
(Nice! So how about choreographing that twin dance?)
Me: Have you two ever been mistaken for each other?
Sam: All the time.
Nadine: In fact, my mom once followed Sam down the street shouting my name because she thought it was me!
Me: Do you two feel like you have more of a clone vibe or a twins separated at birth vibe going on?
Nadine: Honestly, clone. I’ve scrolled through Facebook and been like, “is that a picture of me? No, wait, it’s Sam.”
Sam: Yeah, I’ve definitely done that, too!
(Facebook can be deceiving, especially when you look exactly like someone else)
Me: So who’s the good twin and who’s the evil twin?
Sam: Ooh, I don’t know…
Nadine: I feel like we’re both half and half! So together we could make both a devil and an angel. I know that’s a cop out, but it’s true!
So there you have it. A quick Q&A with two people who look very much alike! If you see Sam or Nadine on Middle path and want to say ‘hi’ to either of them but can’t tell if the person is Nadine or Sam, shouting, “Samdine!” should do the trick. Thanks for reading, and please contact The Thrill if you come across any more Kenyon doppelgängers! It’s fun finding people who have the same face.
