Abby Patton ’23 and Annie Blackman ’20

In September 2019, then Editor-in-Chief Michael Audet ‘20 told me something along the lines of, “One of the Ransom Notes newbies looks exactly like Annie Blackman, I keep calling her Annie instead of Abby.” In true content opportunist fashion, we immediately decided to turn their shared features into an article for our sweet little blog. They’d both gotten the comparison before and agreed to an interview. In September. It is now February. Anyway.

Convincing Annie to do this feature

Annie is a senior English major from Montclair, New Jersey. Abby is a first-year prospective English major (although who knows if that’s still true because I interviewed them four months ago) from Cleveland, Ohio. They both have long brown hair, similar clothing styles, and cool husky speaking voices. The girls are also talented musicians! You can find Annie’s music on Bandcamp, Abby is a member of the Ransom Notes, and both perform in various Kenyon music showcases and open for Horn shows.

Totally organic, not staged photo of Annie and Abby meeting for the first time outside Peirce

Confession time, I voice memo-ed my interview with Annie and Abby in October 2019 but when I went to listen to it this morning, February 2nd, 2020, it wouldn’t work. Understandable, given that I waited four months to write a blog post for no genuine reason and despite nearly constant provocations from close friends and the person I share a bathroom with. So, I had to text them and ask them a couple of questions.

Abby graciously responded right away and I have yet to hear from Annie. If I don’t hear from her by the time I get to the end of this article I’ll have no choice but to fabricate her answers. I’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, here’s Abby!

What do you think about having a Kenyon Doppelganger? Do people ever get you mixed up? Especially at the beginning of the year it was kinda funny because people would tell me that I looked like Annie but I hadn’t even met her yet. Also, I really did think we looked alike when we first met which is crazy because I feel like it’s hard to recognize that from a personal perspective even though other people had been telling me.

What’s it like having a twin (fun fact about Abby: she has a twin!) who didn’t come to Kenyon, then coming here and having people tell you there was another girl on campus who looks just like you? I think it is crazy that there’s another person that looks like me especially since I’m a twin. I don’t actively think that I look like my twin because I’ve spent so much time with her. But, contrary to that, I did think me and Annie looked alike when I first met her which is an odd thing to experience.

Who would win in a fight, you or Annie? Hmm I don’t know who would win in a fight. I am taller than her physically but she seems crafty and clever so that’s another thing.

Annie would not answer my questions, so I’m forced to assume that she thinks having a doppelganger is cool and that Abby would win in a fight.
