Wednesday Playlist: Songs To Drive Home To

What makes a great driving song? Some people say a thumping bass line or a great chorus to sing along to. Those people are probably right when you’re on a road trip with your buddies. But if you’re driving alone, I say mid-tempo indie rock is the way to go. Driving alone is a great time to really experience music, since (a) your car stereo probably has better sound quality than your earbuds and (b) you have a lot of time alone with your thoughts. Why not give those thoughts a nudge in the right direction with some of these pretty songs?

A song about driving to listen to while driving! What a concept! No but seriously you should just listen to every song the Mountain Goats have ever released on your drive. Nobody does longing and/or nostalgia like the Goats.

Monday Playlist: Get Your Groove Back

Fun fact: I recently broke up with my boyfriend. It was mutual and we are still friends and all that crap, but I could still use a pick-me-up. (If you see me, feel free to give me a hug.) I need a musical self-esteem shot today, and I can’t be the only one. So, here are a bunch of songs to help you (me) get through a breakup and feel awesome again. I made a “no Beyonce” rule because otherwise it would be all Beyonce.

How To Read

images

We are all college students here, which means we’re supposed to enjoy reading. “Reading” refers not simply to the act of interpreting the written word, however. “Reading” means curling up with a work of Literary Fiction printed on dead tree matter and looking at all the words on all the pages. This kind of capital-R Reading is the only virtuous form of time-wasting. Think about it: you’d never admit to staying in on a Friday night to watch Instant Netflix, but you’d totally tell your friends if you stayed in to finish reading Lolita.

I think of myself as a person who reads. I enjoy a book from time to time, but I’m much more likely to spend an afternoon browsing Tumblr or watching TV than cracking a book. And yet, if someone says they Don’t Read Books I eye them askance. This is wrong of me.

The whole hierarchy of reading is super dumb. Guys, reading is supposed to be fun. If capital-R Reading is not fun for you, you do not have to do it. Allow me to elaborate:

Monday Playlist: Have a Lovely Day

It has come to my attention that some people have to go to class on Mondays. I have no idea what this is like, because I am exercising senior privilege and have no classes on Mondays. But for those of you who aren’t as privileged as I am, it might help to have some music to ease the pain of dragging your butt to your 9:10 (haha I also don’t have any classes before 1:10, suck it). So, out of the goodness of my heart, I have bequeathed you a playlist of songs that are so lovely even a Monday morning couldn’t ruin them.

Made in Peirce: The Ultimate Dessert

I am very picky about dessert. I’m very picky about all food, actually, but dessert is where people start to think I’m a weirdo. Sure, lots of people don’t like olives, but who doesn’t like cake? Me, that’s who. I usually don’t eat dessert at all unless there are chocolate chip cookies. (I know, it’s hard to be me.) But on weekends, there is a magical secret dessert available that I kick myself every day for not discovering before my senior year. Here’s the recipe:
