We’re #1! We’re #1! ( At Landscaping, Apparently)

Well, folks, the day has finally come — Lawnstarter, a lil’ startup dedicated to “making lawn care easy, affordable and reliable”, has named Kenyon #1 in its list of “The Top 10 Best Landscaped Colleges in the Midwest.” Yes, this may feel like a hilariously specific category, but our campus pride should burst forth nonetheless. Especially when you consider the fact that, in the words of my esteemed overlord Kate Lindsay, “Someone LITERALLY took a shit on our campus landscape two weeks ago.”

Interview with Matt Hellman, Executive Director for New Directions Shelter

Earlier this week, the Thrill had the privilege of speaking to Matt Hellman, executive director for New Directions, the domestic abuse shelter of Knox County (and husband of Housing and ResLife director Jill Engel-Hellman). Our discussion with Matt is featured in honor of Take Back the Night Week, in order to shed light on resources for survivors of assault and abuse in and around Knox County.
Can you explain the mission of New Directions, and give a short overview of what you do?
  • The mission of New Directions is to work with the Knox County community to promote healthy and loving relationships.  New Directions offers safe housing to persons escaping domestic violence, a 24-hour hotline, legal advocacy, sexual assault services and community education.  More information is available at newdirectionsshelter.org.  The hotline number is (740) 397-4357.
How long have you served as director of New Directions?
  • New Directions’ first and only executive director, Mary Hendrickson, passed away unexpectedly on June 7, 2014.  I was hired by New Directions’ Board of Directors and started six weeks ago on August 19th.

Project for Open Voices: Jealous

The Thrill is proud to feature personal narratives courtesy of Project Open Voices, a coalition of students providing a platform for open dialogue on campus. Today’s submission was written in anticipation of Take Back The Night ’14, taking place next week from September 28th to October 4th.

Trigger warning — This personal narrative discusses issues of sexual misconduct.

Overheard in Peirce Pub last week —

Male Student #1 — “Wait, so is he still under investigation?”

Male Student #2 — “By his university, not by [inaudible].”

Male Student #3, without looking up from his computer screen — “You have sex with a girl, that doesn’t make it rape. I mean, I’m inclined to think, if you wait, like, a year to press charges, after he becomes famous…”

Nods of agreement. I couldn’t hear the segue, but I know they quickly moved on to a conversation about football scores.

After a few minutes, I packed up my things, slipped out of the Pub (taking pains not to make eye contact with Students #1-3), took a long, sweaty, angry bike ride, got home, took a shower, ate a Hot Pocket and moved on.

Or at least, I thought I did. Continue reading
