Do it tonight: Owl Creeks Spring Concert

I've got an endless supply of hungover owls for these posts.

As they say, it’s that time of year again. Come on — there’s nothing greater than adorable girls with beautiful voices singing a cappella versions of songs ranging from pop hits to indie favorites to … well, let’s just say some of the emails this time around imply a certainSpace Jam classic could just make an appearance. That’s right, the Owl Creeks spring concert is tonight, 8:00 p.m. in Rosse Hall.

The Owl Creeks always put on a great show that leaves audience members with springs in their steps and songs in their hearts. You probably shouldn’t miss it.

Do it tonight: The Stairwells “Bear With Us” Concert

The Stairwells, one of Kenyon’s overwhelming number of a cappella groups, but the only one to present something called “acoustapella,” will be performing tonight at 8 in the Horn Gallery. The “folkesque” mixed-gender group will also be providing snacks! No word on whether bears will be involved. If you really love a cappella and/or procrastination, you can see them and the Ransom Notes at 7!

Do it tonight: Caroling & Kokes Study Break

You know you need a break from that boring instrumental music you’ve put on loop on your iTunes in an attempt to keep yourself focused on your studying and paper-writing. After all, it’s the holiday season, and what better way to revive your spirits and forget about the far-reaching effects of hegemonic masculinity than to spend the whole evening participating in and listening to song?

First up, there’s caroling, hosted by Harcourt Parish. Head over to the Church of the Holy Spirit at 9:00 p.m. to sing some rousing Christmas songs and drink some hot chocolate made from scratch. None of that weak Nestle stuff here.

Next, if you haven’t had enough, the Kokes will be having a study break, conveniently located in the library atrium. They’re even taking requests — just email kokosingers@gmail.com with a selection from their list of possible songs. They’ll start at 10:00 p.m.

Do it tonight: Owl Creeks Winter Concert

The Owl Creeks will probably be more chipper than this actual owl.

If you’re an a cappella completionist, you definitely can’t afford to overlook the Owl Creeks. Kenyon’s all-female a cappella group is having their first show of the year tonight, and if you like cute people in cute outfits singing pretty songs, you should go. Their Facebook event boasts a wide range of artists, including Bon Iver, Amy Winehouse and, of course, JoJo. What’s not to love?

The Owl Creeks winter concert is tonight at 8:00 p.m. in Rosse Hall. As ever, seating will be first come, first served.

Ransom Notes Make A Cappella Competition, Prove the Haters Wrong

Facebook.com

Let’s be honest:  a cappella kids can be harsh, especially to new groups trying to carve out a niche in an already competitive market. So when the Ransom Notes started up last year, we heard some skepticism coming from members of the established groups. But after filling up the Bolton for their fall concert, it seems they’ve finally shown they can play in the big leagues — if not to all of their a cappella peers, then at least to the Kenyon community in general.

Now, they’ve earned a berth in the Varsity Vocals A Cappella Championship, put on every year by the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella. They’re competing in the Midwest division against such amusingly named groups as the Acapelicans (from Siena Heights University) and the Bathtub-Dogs (University of Nebraska-Lincoln). Oh, and the University of Chicago Ransom Notes. Awkward.

So best of luck to the boys in red. We hope everyone loves the Lion King as much as you do.
