Four Years of Walking By: A Response to Kenyon Activism
cw: slurs
It happens every year. That’s what I tell first years when they look at me with wide-eyed confusion at the megaphones and the posters telling queer people they need Jesus and women that they need to be quiet. After four years you get used to it, but every year it hurts in different ways.
As a first year, I was hurt because I was newly out of the closet and there were some people trying to force me back in. Now I’m angry and frustrated for an entirely different reason. I want to talk about performative allyship, and how here at Kenyon, it’s something of a disease.
So Long, Farewell, We’re Gone
Wow what a semester! As always, this is just a post to say that Erica and I have been honored to be your Editors-in-Chief. We’ve had some good times running the thrill, we’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve posted some things we probably shouldn’t have. But it’s been fun! But it is time for Erica and I to go where all Thrill Editors-in-chief go after their time is up, that big WordPress blog in the sky. (Jk we’ll still probably be around).
Anyway, we’re passing off the gauntlet to Mia Fox and Shayne Wagner as Editors-in-Chief for next semester, and they’re gonna do great!
It’s been real y’all, remember us and think of us when you can #NeverForgetThrillSpring2017
Love,
Sam and Erica
Dear Class of 2021
Dear Incoming Member of the Class of 2021,
You will not meet me your Orientation week. I won’t hold open the doors of the library for you. I will not be at your first a capella concert. In the next four years you may walk the same steps as I did, your favorite VI meal may be the same as mine, and you may live in the rooms I lived. These four years will not be the best years of your life, and they will not be the worst. But they will change you and make you into the person you are meant to become. I didn’t want advice when I entered Kenyon, but as I leave I want to give some semblance of advice to you.
