Four Minute Lecture: Professor Gilda Rodríguez

Way back in the day, we at the Thrill used to do something called Four Minute Lectures, in which we’d get professors to talk about their research and interests for four(ish) minutes! We’ve decided to bring that feature back with Professor Gilda Rodríguez of the Women’s and Gender Studies department. Her research is focused on different organizations of gender and societal roles in cultures that the Western gaze would deem as “primitive” or “underdeveloped” (hint: the Western gaze is veeerryyy wrong). Anyway, I’ve done enough talking. Time to listen to Professor Rodríguez’s lecture! I 10000% promise you will learn something (and if you don’t, I will give you your money back). Enjoy!

Thank you, Michael “Webboi” Lahanas, for using the fancy film things to do the fancy filming and editing!

Title IX Fliers Vandalized With Feminist Critiques, Smolak Gives Statement

For the last week, Kenyon’s Title IX Coordinators have put out a series of much-discussed fliers in Peirce Hall, commenting on sexual misconduct at Kenyon, and providing information on the prevention of misconduct, as well. One recent flier, however, caused a stir with its message on grinding, and its appropriateness. Last night, many of the fliers were written on by a “Sex Positive Feminist” who took fault with the language of the flier, pointing out the negative aspects of the message, as it can shame individuals who choose to partake in provocative dancing, with or without the intent to then have sex. For more, including a comment from Interim Title IX Coordinator Linda Smolak, read after the break. Continue reading

Opinion: Songs That Reference “Murder, She Wrote” Shouldn’t Need Trigger Warnings

Is it a mystery, or have we already solved it?

It’s like they never even watched it.

Trigger warning: discussion of violence against women. This is an opinion piece, all views expressed within it are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of The Thrill.

Murder, She Wrote is one of my favorite shows. I love it. Mystery shows are my jam in general, but Murder, She Wrote just delivers on such a consistent basis. At least, it has so far. I’m almost to season five. It’s campy and predictable, but every episode feels satisfying, even when, or actually, especially when the solution is just goofy, like that time the killer was a trained dog pressing a button in the security room, causing a gate to run over the heiress as she was trying to get back into the mansion. Classic.

10 o’clock list: Speculation Behind the Nuge Poster

photo

“Take me home”, she says.

Rather than the typical black Northface and wallet, somebody lost an 8×10 portrait of the Nuge last weekend. It was late Sunday afternoon when Dyer Pierce ’14 emailed the student body to inquire if anybody had lost a picture of Former President S. Georgia Nugent near the New Apts parking lot. In the usual sea of pleas for lost jackets, phones, keys, wallets, hats, and friends, Pierce’s email stood out. HAHAHA what. Why would you have a portrait of the Nuge? Well, nobody seems to know–and so far, nobody has claimed the portrait. In an attempt at investigative journalism, we present some speculation about the scene of the crime and its victim:

  1. It’s like Stonehenge. Nobody knows how it got there. Nobody knows what it means. Aliens? Definitely Aliens. Continue reading
