The Lead Story: As you all know, the government is still shutdown. This conflict stems from the Republican-controlled House’s inability to pass a “clean” continuing resolution. A continuing resolution, or CR, is like a budget for when Congress can’t pass a budget (it hasn’t in three years because our legislature is controlled by opposing parties and it takes 60 votes for the Senate to pass a budget without House consent).

The Lead Story: A luxury mall in Nairobi, Kenya was the target of a terrorist attack on Saturday that has claimed the lives of 62 at last count. The attack appears to be the work of The Shabab, a Somalia based Al-Qaeda affiliate. Some of the attackers remain in the mall and are engaged in a standoff with Kenyan soldiers. Update: CNN is reporting heavy gunfire out of the Westgate mall as the military attempts to draw the three-day conflict to close. Few hostages remain.
As a Kenyon student, you’ve been in this scenario too many times before. You’re making small talk with that one distant relative, co-worker or peculiarly attractive tollbooth attendant when they drop the A-bomb of questions on you: “So where do you go to school?” You gulp, clench your fists, and squeak “Kenyon.” What comes next is the most abominable nine-word-phrase in the English language: “Wait, wait, wait … you go to school in Kenya?”
