10 o’clock list: Things We Forgot to Sign-Up For

Brewing club? Via carleton.edu

So you went to the Activities Fair, signed up with a dozen clubs and, as a result, gave a lot of student leaders false hopes regarding the popularity of their organizations. Unacceptable. You should really reevaluate your morals. You may also notice by now that those same student leaders to whom you promised your left toe and first child are convinced that most of your peers failed to show at the fair. As such, they continue to send a barrage of emails with the subject line Miss us at the activities fair?!  or Forget to sign up?! Frankly, we’re pretty fucking salty about this. We didn’t miss you at the activities fair. In fact, we probably intentionally avoided you. However, here are a few things we forgot to sign-up for. And let me tell you, it’s not club swimming.

1. Obamacare. Far more practical than Rugby or some other tomfoolery. Many of us are about to be thrust out of Kenyon’s womb into the dystopian delivery room with the ugly florescent lights that is real life. I will most certainly be ‘born’ with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. A) Because, Kenyon, if you are so disillusioned to think that this will work, you are heavily intoxicated. B) Because, no one is going to pry me out of my NCA and put me into the job market sans healthcare without a little help from Mr. Jack Daniels.  Continue reading

Houthi rebels (via cnn.com)

Good morning! Here’s what you missed while enjoying the beginning of spring this past weekend:

The lead story: A civil war may erupt in Yemen as Houthi rebels seize an airport. The rebels are Shiite Muslims in a predominately Sunni country and have been responsible for fomenting violence in the country, including helping to remove the Yemeni president from office in January. The United Nations Security Council has backed President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi though it warns of civil war. There are also concerns that al-Qaeda or ISIS may take advantage of the situation. The U.S. removed its troops from the country over the weekend.

Coming up: Starbucks and race, a state funeral for Richard III, oil prices, and developments in Ukraine.

Booker Gay Marriage

Senator-elect Corey Booker presided over gay marriages in Newark early this morning.

The Lead Story:

For the first time, gay couples in New Jersey had the opportunity to marry this morning. This comes as the state’s supreme court refused to ban same-sex marriage ceremonies last week. Newark mayor (and senator-elect) Corey Booker officiated the marriage of seven same-sex couples. There was a heckling incident, but it was swiftly dealt with by police. Equality!

These people are not going to visit the Statue of Liberty.

These people are not going to visit the Statue of Liberty. Thanks, Obama.

Good morning! Here’s what you missed over the weekend:

The Lead Story: As you all know, the government is still shutdown. This conflict stems from the Republican-controlled House’s inability to pass a “clean” continuing resolution. A continuing resolution, or CR, is like a budget for when Congress can’t pass a budget (it hasn’t in three years because our legislature is controlled by opposing parties and it takes 60 votes for the Senate to pass a budget without House consent).

Congress voted on something!

Congress voted on something!

Good morning! Here’s what you missed over the weekend:

The Lead Story: The GOP-led House of Representatives passed a bill on Saturday that would fund the government and delay Obamacare a year. President Obama has said that he would veto such a bill, effectively guaranteeing a temporary federal government shutdown. In case you’re wondering, here’s who gets cut the most.
